Chiang Rai was founded circa 1262 by King Mengrai and was the first capital of Lanna Thai (Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields). The province contains Thailand's northernmost point at Mae Sai, and is  well known for its beautiful mountain scenery, and hill tribes. Chiang Rai also falls within the famous Golden Triangle, the area where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar (Burma) and Laos meet.
